Products Description
Â
Trunnion ball valves are important tools for controlling the flow of liquid, gas, steam or oil in pipelines. The device features a quarter-turn design in which the ball can bend 90 degrees to block or allow fluid flow. To control the start-stop flow cycle, these valves feature a rotating spherical disk design in the middle.

How Do Trunnion Mounted Ball Valves Work?
Â
Trunnion ball valves are simply 90 degree rotary valves. This means that to open or close the valve, the actuator must be tilted at a 90-degree angle. As the actuator turns, the ball pivots, allowing free flow of the medium as the hole faces the pipe. With one more turn of the handle, the ball moves so that its hole moves away from the pipe, stopping the flow.
For example, you need to control the flow of oil through a critical process component. To accomplish this task, install a three-piece, split, or half-hole ball valve. You must turn the valve's actuator 90 degrees in one direction to start oil flow (usually clockwise).
The ball is attached to the valve stem and is associated with the actuator. The ball also moves as the stem rotates, so one side of the bearing hole meets the pipe. Due to the restriction of oil flow by the half-hole valve, the flow pressure of the oil flow is reduced.
Rotate the actuator again to stop flow, moving the ball and stem at the same time. The ball's hole is now away from the pipe and flow is impeded. Upstream pressure pushes the valve seat closer to the ball, creating a tight seal.
Because of its spring-loaded design, even moderate pressure forces the seat of a trunnion-mounted ball valve against the ball. Oil flow is stopped by this closed seal, which also prevents oil from penetrating the valve's internal components.
Trunnion ball valves are used in high and low pressure systems. In the high-pressure setting, the trunnion absorbs any additional pressure on the seat and ball, allowing the valve to maintain its torque. Under low pressure conditions, the valve's spring-loaded seat moves toward the ball to create a tight seal.
